The Colosseum is a place for tourists. I do not like places crawling with people walking in random directions in a sort of microbial excitement. Parenthetically and inexplicably I do like to be in crowds. Maybe it is the crowds where I have no purpose or necessary and immediate destination which are pleasing? I came across this image which I had rejected in an earlier review, and decided it presented the perfect visual representation of what the Colosseum is today, but not what it has been over the centuries. iI is a place of tourists and of selfie stick sales, and as such is best left to be viewed at a distance; in a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes. Up close it becomes what interests me as a place where people gathered for ‘events’ of spectacle and horror. The building’s facade shows the wounds it has witnessed and borne. As it is so overrun with tourists there appears to be scant opportunity to see what the place really was as it is occluded with bright colors and insistent hawkers. At this wide-angle distance the place takes on its history, its shape, and its place in the world. We climbed down from the rarefied world of the Palatine Hill, and descended into the world hungry for bread.
