We dropped by St. Paul Outside the Walls on the way back from Tre Fontane. Lunch came first at a Zampagna Trattoria across the street from the basilica. Very important! Then came Latin reading in a park adjacent and north of the basilica. The Americans parked their tanks in the park at some point during the WWII liberation of Rome. Nice place for tanks. There was some leisurely strolling in and around the basilica. The entrance garden from the south is beautiful. In the other cardinal directions the outside looks a little dreary. Constantine ordered the building of the original basilica. It got somewhat larger as time went on. The inside is phenomenally large and quite overwhelming in scale with awe inspiring gilding. We did a fair amount of waiting on a stone ledge which ran the length of the east side of the basilica. I think we were waiting for vespers as I recall. I enjoyed this stop a lot because I had a relaxing time with the Hat. We had a leisurely stroll around the front in the garden and an equally pleasant time inside walking towards the altar. One would need binoculars to actually see the events at the altar from the south entrance. However, this was no problem as south entrance is miles from the altar and there was effectively no one in this neck of the woods. One has to get up to the arms of the place in order even begin to get in sight of actual faces. Gradually activity and people started to fill the front of this chiesa for giants.
